Digital receiver simulation
Digital simulation of the data link for the Saturn-Uranus spacecraft design is summarized. The data link is a 40 watt, 400 MegaHertz, 44 bit-a-second link, a power starved link, and uses convolution coding. Aspects of the link of particular interest are atmospheric scintillation and the Doppler to data rate ratio. The major characteristics of the scintillation are modeled in terms of tapped delay lines. A candidate system design and receiver design is developed. A computer flow diagram depicting a routine for the error rate and one for acquisition is presented. Various coding algorithms are analyzed since the convolution code is sensitive to the distribution of error and the actual pattern of the error
Communications constraints on a Jupiter probe mission
The use of the Saturn Uranus telemetry design for Jupiter entry requires the following qualifications in space probe data handling: A single dump substitute for the dual damp, a reduction in the neutral mass spectrometer rate, and providing that a second burn is made, a delta V correction
Utility company views of geothermal development
The views of geothermal development from a utility company standpoint are presented. The impediments associated with such developments as required reliability and identification of risks are discussed. The utility industry historically is not a risk-taking industry. Support of rapid geothermal development by the utility industry requires identification and elimination of risks or absorption of the risks by other agencies. Suggestions as to the identification and minimization of risks are made
Predicting the outcome of renal transplantation
ObjectiveRenal transplantation has dramatically improved the survival rate of hemodialysis patients. However, with a growing proportion of marginal organs and improved immunosuppression, it is necessary to verify that the established allocation system, mostly based on human leukocyte antigen matching, still meets today's needs. The authors turn to machine-learning techniques to predict, from donor-recipient data, the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of the recipient 1 year after transplantation.DesignThe patient's eGFR was predicted using donor-recipient characteristics available at the time of transplantation. Donors' data were obtained from Eurotransplant's database, while recipients' details were retrieved from Charite Campus Virchow-Klinikum's database. A total of 707 renal transplantations from cadaveric donors were included.MeasurementsTwo separate datasets were created, taking features with <10% missing values for one and <50% missing values for the other. Four established regressors were run on both datasets, with and without feature selection.ResultsThe authors obtained a Pearson correlation coefficient between predicted and real eGFR (COR) of 0.48. The best model for the dataset was a Gaussian support vector machine with recursive feature elimination on the more inclusive dataset. All results are available at http://transplant.molgen.mpg.de/.LimitationsFor now, missing values in the data must be predicted and filled in. The performance is not as high as hoped, but the dataset seems to be the main cause.ConclusionsPredicting the outcome is possible with the dataset at hand (COR=0.48). Valuable features include age and creatinine levels of the donor, as well as sex and weight of the recipient
Speeding up Permutation Testing in Neuroimaging
Multiple hypothesis testing is a significant problem in nearly all
neuroimaging studies. In order to correct for this phenomena, we require a
reliable estimate of the Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER). The well known
Bonferroni correction method, while simple to implement, is quite conservative,
and can substantially under-power a study because it ignores dependencies
between test statistics. Permutation testing, on the other hand, is an exact,
non-parametric method of estimating the FWER for a given -threshold,
but for acceptably low thresholds the computational burden can be prohibitive.
In this paper, we show that permutation testing in fact amounts to populating
the columns of a very large matrix . By analyzing the spectrum of this
matrix, under certain conditions, we see that has a low-rank plus a
low-variance residual decomposition which makes it suitable for highly
sub--sampled --- on the order of --- matrix completion methods. Based
on this observation, we propose a novel permutation testing methodology which
offers a large speedup, without sacrificing the fidelity of the estimated FWER.
Our evaluations on four different neuroimaging datasets show that a
computational speedup factor of roughly can be achieved while
recovering the FWER distribution up to very high accuracy. Further, we show
that the estimated -threshold is also recovered faithfully, and is
stable.Comment: NIPS 1
Digital simulation of a communication link for Pioneer Saturn Uranus atmospheric entry probe, part 1
A digital simulation study is presented for a candidate modulator/demodulator design in an atmospheric scintillation environment with Doppler, Doppler rate, and signal attenuation typical of the conditions of an outer planet atmospheric probe. The simulation results indicate that the mean channel error rate with and without scintillation are similar to theoretical characterizations of the link. The simulation gives information for calculating other channel statistics and generates a quantized symbol stream on magnetic tape from which error correction decoding is analyzed. Results from the magnetic tape data analyses are also included. The receiver and bit synchronizer are modeled in the simulation at the level of hardware component parameters rather than at the loop equation level and individual hardware parameters are identified. The atmospheric scintillation amplitude and phase are modeled independently. Normal and log normal amplitude processes are studied. In each case the scintillations are low pass filtered. The receiver performance is given for a range of signal to noise ratios with and without the effects of scintillation. The performance is reviewed for critical reciever parameter variations
